Well, this is my first post ever, so I suppose I should start with AWESOME GLITTER TEXT!!!

Now how's THAT for a title! Yeah! ...

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Asexual reproduction is where a living organisim reproduces by itself. But what is sexual reproduction? Well, I'd tell you, but I'd probably not be able to ever post again, so... you know...
GOOGLE IT!

Now, under normal circumstances, Animals 'can't' reproduce asexually, however, thanks to the amazing thing known as the KINGDOM OF LIFE, we don't need to worry about that anymore.

Plants (most of the time) Bacterium (excluding E. Coli and a few others) and Fungi ( all reproduce asexually. Their are (in real life) very few animals that reproduce asexually, but their are bound to be some, so let's dive right in... Take that however you want...

The Earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), although SUPPOSED to reproduce sexually (I really don't know how), can actually produce asexually. In very specific circumstances. You see, and earthworm doesn't really have a brain, or a heart, or anything that resembles a normal creature. So when it's cut in two, if there's enough energy to keep both ends alive, it will grow into two sepertate worms. Isn't that awesome! The seastar (Asteroidia) also has a simillar process, where if one of it's arms is cut off, the arm can grow into another seastar.

Finally, I want to talk about an interesting animal called an Aphid (Aphioidea), which not only can produce both sexually and asexually, but... well, to understand it, you just need to watch this: Yeah, it got a little off the topic, but it was the most reliable video I could find. Now, I think I'm going to end my post here, because my hands are hurting and, well, I've already condensed a weeks worth of SCIENCE LESSONS into one post, so... HAPPY BLOGGING!
Glitter Words Today we converted fraction decimals and percentages in our math books. first we ruled up a table with 3 colums and 5 rows( you can put as many rows as you want).Then jp7numeracy put one number in each row and then we had to convert those numbers to the emty boxs. Currently we are learning about asexual reproduction. As a general rule, animals cannot reproduce asexually. However, there are exceptions. Amoebas and other single-celled organisms reproduce asexually, being too small to have gender. Certain larger animals may reproduce asexually through either: parthenogenesis under certain circumstances (that is, reproduction via self-cloning), gynogenesis (via the catalyst of a male nearby which does not actually fertilize the eggs). Here is a video of bacteria reproducing asexually.

Today in maths we learnt all about decimals, percentages and fractions. We learnt how to convert decimals to fractions and percentages and vice verse. It was a heap of fun and everyone was asking lots of questions which helped me a lot.

Last Friday, we learn't how to multiply decimals, I found it fun and easy. Here is a video I found, to explain what we learn't about:

Finding Energy in Food

Hi guys! This week in Science we have been burning food. You may be wondering, why would be burning food? The answer is this: We are finding the energy in food. It was a pretty fun prac. I, BF, was in a group with RA, SN, and RB. We all took turns at burning the food. Here are the results:

I thought the chips had the most fat because:

Today we looked at testing for Fat, Starch, Protein and Sugar in food. We did this by using a range of chemical tests.
To test for starch for example, we added two drops of iodine to a range of food samples. A blue/black reaction suggests starch is present.

CHEMICALS!!!!!!!!!!


Today we tested food samples if they contained starch, sugar, protein and fat. We added chemicals such as Bluret Solution A and B and Benedict's solution to the food. We could tell what it contained by the colour of the food. For example, to find starch in food, you had to add iodine to the food and it would turn bluish-black if it had starch in it.

MICROSCOPE BLOOD SAMPLES!




The other day I got to look through a microscope at blood samples. I tried 4 different samples; Sickle Cell, Smear, Kambio and Sperm. These were amazing to look at... but sperm was by far the best! Looking through the microscope made it look like purple and pink bunched up jelly beans!
I had so much fun, and microscopes are AMAZING!

Pluck

A few days ago me and my class had a look at some of the organs of a lamb. We looked at the liver,the lungs, the heart, the windpipe and the tongue was even there! We got to get a good look and feel of arteries and what organs feel like. The teacher showed us the sectum and pumped air into the lungs, it was good watching them inflate.

The other day we had the opportunity of dissecting a heart. This was a very interesting activity and I enjoyed learning all different parts that make up the heart. The key points we looked at was the trachea, veins and arteries. I learnt that the veins job is to transport blood to the heart, whereas the arteries transport blood away from it to the lungs. I also learnt how to find out the difference between the left and the right side of the heart. The left side's wall would be a lot more firmer than the right. I really wish we could do this activity again sometime.

In science today we got to dissect a heart, which was like the pluck that we did earlier
this weak, but it was even better. Luckily I got to be the one that made the incisions,
which made the experience even better than it already was. MVW took pictures and
taped it, so that was good too. The heart that we got was monstrously huge, and the wall
of the left ventricle was atleast 1 inch thick. Nearly all of the features were clearly visible,
but the valves were less obvious than they were in the text book. We didn't have any
problems, and everything was fun, even putting the scalpel together.

This has definitely been the best activity we have done in school, and I think lab pracs are
going to be one of the most fun things we do all year.




Yesterday we dissected a sheep's heart. It was really interesting and I would never have done that at my old school. We got to observe the key points that makes a heart function, including the trachea, veins and arteries. Sounds really gross but is actually really cool and I am really excited about what we will learn this year.

Today we did a heart dissection and we could see everything that we learnt in class
a few weeks ago .We got to feel the sheeps heart and we got to cut it open. On the
right side of the heart me and my friend could see some of the deoxygenated blood
that was still left inside the heart. And of the left side their wasn't much oxygenated
blood but the left side of the heart was really tough unlike the right side of the heart
which was soft. In previous lesssons jp7numeracy told us that the left side of the heart
is stronger then the right side of the heart becuase the right side of the heart has to pump
blood all around the body.

In the past week our class has been doing some biology in the class. we started off with the pluck, were we got to have a look at the main organs of a lamb, including the Trachea, Lungs, Heart and the Liver.

2 days after we then got to dissect a sheep heart with my lab partner MN it was awesome!!!!! We had one cut each and then used the tweezers to poke through the main arteries and veins.

i cant wait till my next science lesson!!!!!!!!!!
Yesterday, I had the interesting experience of dissecting a sheep brain, I was scared cutting open the brain, so thats why I was a scribe. I documented the whole dissection! But that wasnt my only job, my second job was to examin the brain and all the parts including the aorta, right ventrical, left ventrical, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein etc!!!

The Pluck.

Not to long ago, I undertook the challenge of touching the inner of a sheep! (the lungs, heart, trachea and liver)
I had to feel the lungs and other parts and observe things. I found out that the lungs expand majorly when we breathe in and out! The pluck was enjoyable and i had lots of fun!
Now I know more about the human body! (and a sheep's)

Today during class we had the heart dissection, this was very enjoyable. we learnt about where the veins are and that the walls of the left and right are very different. Shown on the left is the left wall of the heart, it is much thicker so it can deal with the pressure of pushing blood around the body.

In Term 1 this year we will be looking at Whole Numbers, Operations, Number Properties and Patterns, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages in Maths. In Science we will be looking at Body Systems, Circulatory System, Digestive System and Reproduction.

This term in science, we have been learning about energy and energy at home. What I have learnt is that the fluorescent bulbs are really wasteful because they produce more heat which is 80% then they do light which is raising costs on your power bills. I have also learned how to read a electricity meter. Also how energy transfers through the home.
This will help me in the future by managing bills and also having to do another project like this then I will have knowledge before hand.

throuht out this term i have been discuvering how energy is wasted and used around my home.

what i lernt from this task
i found out that at my home i have 3 phases, because of the langth of my drive way and becaus of my aircondition, which wastes a lot of power in cooling my home. i also found out that L.E.D lights are vervy energy efitiont but they cost more than $20 and are too expensive to ues in the home.

what action i',m going to take as a resolt of this task
i am only going to try to ues the lights less and try to keep all the doors closed when the AC is on, also i will try not to ues the AC as much and ues some fans insted.

Energy @ Home Project


This term in Science, our grade has done a project on Energy in our homes. This project allowed us to analyse our enrgy consumption in detail. In the asssignment, we looked at how energy is transferred and transformed in the home, how energy is lost in the home and how to improve energy-efficiency in the home.


What I have learned in this project is how to read an electricity meter, how to correctly identify different light bulbs, and how to research accurately and create a report.
This will help me in the futuure for when I have to run a home myself. This has also helped me to set out my time much more evenly in order to complete an assignment. This project will be one of my milestones for life.

Energy At Home Science Project

The energy at home science project was very interesting, and heped me create new understandings. I learnt that lightbulbs aren't just lightbulbs. There are LED's, Halogens, Incandescents and many more, and all have a different impact on the environment. Just the section on lightbulbs made me more aware on what changes my family should make, and I am now making suggestions on what would save them more money and use less power.

Checking all the star ratings of my appliances made me much more aware of my family's power use. My washing machine is only 1 star out of 6, making it extremely inefficient. My dishwasher is only 2.5 stars out of 6, so it uses a lot of power. My fridge is 3 stars out of 6, so it is kind of efficient, and kind of inefficient. These appliances should all be replaced, ideally with 4 or 5 star machines. Replacing them would reduce energy use, and the power cost.

I also learnt that little things can make a big difference. For instance, on a sunny summer day I could leave most of the lights off, because if I leave them on the air conditioner would have to work harder because of the extra heat radiated from the lights. Making sure all lights are off and all power switches are turned off before I leave home could also make a significant difference.

This project has made me SOO much more aware of my family's energy use. I am now trying to make a difference, in my family's energy use, my family's energy cost and the environmental impact. And it's all thanks to this Energy At Home Science Project!

Science at home reflection

This will probably be my final post jp7numeracy blog because in 2 and a half days I will no longer be in year 7. Over the past month we have been doing a research task on energy around the house. It covered transfering and transforming energy around the home, how energy is lost in the home and which ways we can save energy around the home. This helped my family understand how much energy little things in the house waste.

I am now going to pull out all my appliances that are on standby or are not being used. I am also going to turn off lights in rooms that are not being used. My family has not changed their views on electricity usage at all, sadly.

Science at Home Reflection

This term in science our class has been working on a booklet called Energy at Home. From going through this booklet i have learnt how my family is wasting energy and using energy in the household. This has been benificial to my family, we have now chosen more energy efficient appliances and have changed our lifestyle to save money.

Semester 2 Term 4, in Science we got a assignment that was a little different to other assignments. We got handed out a booklet that we had to work on at home. We had to fill in the blank spaces. The knowledge I got out of this booklet was incredible. By the knowledge I gained, I used it on the report. It was really helpful, i think i did very good in this task. I learnt many things that i never heard of before.
