What is your solution? How did you solve it?
Edwin wanted to improve his typing so he practised and tested himself regularly. His mean typing speed after nine tests was 38·5 words per minute. What speed would he need in the next test to increase his average to 40 words per minute?

That is actually a great brain teaser as there are several points to that question. Well you would get 38.5 times 9 = 346.5
ReplyDeleteI got nine because of his tests and 38.5 because that is his current speed
Then guessing sort of comes into the question
Where you would try different types of numbers or you could just say that you need 400 because you will divide that by 10- ten tests
So 400 divide 10 equals to 40 that will give our answer. Hope you found that helpful
Well, the way I worked it out was like this:
ReplyDeleteFirst, I multiplied 38.5 by 9; which is 346.5.
Second, I took 346.5 from 400 (40x10=400).
I was then left with 53.5 -- which is the answer!
My solution:
ReplyDeleteFirst, 40 - 38.5 = 1.5
Now, 1.5 x 9 = 13.5
Then, 13.5 + 40 = 53.5
So the answer is 53.5
