Question Unrelated

Sorry if this question has nothing to do with what we are learning, but if you put some of the chromosones from one fruit seed in another, would the seed grow into fruit tree bearing hybrid fruit that is a mix between the 2?

  1. Hi BB,

I'm no scientist but I think that if you take some chromosomes from two similar types of fruit--for example an apple and a pear--then you might get a mix of the two. But if you take some chromosomes from two really different fruit like an apple and an orange (because the orange is a completely different variety of tree) the result would probably be that you wouldn't get anything from the mix.

Scientists like to do this sort of thing all the time, and the easiest time to do it is to change the genes in some pollen before it is used to fertilize a flower. That way they only have to change one cell, and that cell grows into a seed containing that gene in *all* its cells. There are too many cells in a seed to change it once it *is* a seed.

Hey, I really like what you are all doing here. Keep up the great work!

  2. That is a fantastic question that would make an interesting experiment.
