Diet Coke and Mentos Experiment

Hi everyone,

It has been a while! A few days ago in Science we completed a prac on Diet Coke and Mentos to find the reaction of the Diet Coke when the Mentos was added. Here is a video:

The reason why this occurs is because the Mentos has little "dimples" in it that make it's surface, well, sort of like the Moon, all craters and everything. Yep. Anyway, these littles dimples allow CO2 from the mentos to rise up. This causes the Diet Coke to spray everywhere. Normally one would make a medium sized explosion. Now we aren't a normal Year 7 class. The reason I say that is maybe because of the fact  that we used 7 mentos, and 1.25L of Diet Coke. The result? It spurted about 4 metres in to the air, and went on for about 15 seconds long. Now that is an explosion! Cups, anybody?

Ice, Water, Stream

Glitter Words
[Glitterfy.com - *Glitter Words*]

Last week we completed a Ice, Water, Steam Prac. We started by melting Ice, then boiling water which finally turned into steam. This happened because of the particles heated up and became looser.

Glitter Text - http://www.sparklee.com
For the past few weeks we have been busy learning about forces and also how to write prac reports and have certainly been putting these skills to use. We have assignments due soon and we need to write a prac report for apart of our assesment. To practise we did a prac in class called 'Landing time of a parachute'. In this prac we would have an independent variable that is being changed is the area of the canopy and the dependent variable that is being measured was the time it took for the parachute to land. On the forces side of things we used plastic garbage bag. This was so the air resistance didn't just travel through tiny holes which may have been in other materials which could've been used. There was also a bit of plasticine/dough on the end of a paperclip which was on the parachute as weight. This was also known as gravity and the parachute was slowly pulled down. It was better to have less weight for a balanced between gravity and air resistance for a smoother landing though.

this term in maths and science we started to learn reproducing and how the body works in maths we learnt how to multiply, divide, add and subtract fractions and percentages

This term in Numeracy has been so good it is better than any of the previous terms in my schooling life. The highlights have been the heart dissection, and the unit on cardiovascular and respiratory organs. I have learnt so much that there were no bad parts at all. This is a photo from what I think was the best I have EVER DONE:

The dissections have given science a whole new aspect, and maths is now fun and challenging.
Custom Glitter Text This term I have learnt how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply fractions in maths. I have also learnt how to convert fractions to decimals and persentages. I have learnt how the digestive system works in science too.

This term we learn't alot of interesting and cool things in both maths and science, heres a bit of a recap.

Maths: We learn't how to multiply, divide, subtract and add decimals and fractions. We learn't how to convert percentages, decimals and fractions and we learn't about mixed numbers, common fractions, equivlent fractions, LCM and HCF and many more things.

Science: We had so many pracs; we did a sheep's pluck, a heart dissection, a flower dissection. We also had some mini pracs like; how to turn on, turn off and use a bunsen burner, the burning of the food, starch content, sugar content. protein and fat content. Not only did we just do pracs we also did theory and we learn't about the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems. It was such a busy term and I can't wait till term 2.

Here a few pictures of our pracs from previous posts:

Flower Dissection

I learned heaps while doing the dissection! I found it very interesting too... I found out how flowers produce more flowers! Its like when some pollen from another flower's male piece (known as stamen) rubs off onto another flower's female piece, its sticks to the female piece (Known as style) and goes down through the style and down to the ovary. The seeds that are found in the ovary are known as ovule! As shown in this picture to the right:

I never knew how such pretty flowers produced so many other flowers until we dissected a flower. I think it just goes to show that nature is the thing that makes the planet....The beautiful alive planet!

Thats all from me now
SN

Under my own decision, and not being forced by jp7numeracy at gun point... gulp... I now present to you:

WHAT I LEARNT THIS TERM*

Well, let's start with Maths, could I actually liked it more then Science. And I'm going to guess that some of you just booed me. Thanks, like my self esteem is low enough already.

Basically, we learnt all the basics of Multiplying, Dividing, Subtracting, Adding, and Converting Fractions, Percentages, and Decimals. Now, instead of taking 40 minutes to write how to do all this, there are plenty of videos on this blog already. So I'll just leave you with this picture:

Okay, now I'll tell you about Science. If you're still at this post of course. We learnt about the Circulatory System, the Excreatory System, the Digestive System and Asexual Reproduction. Again, there's already an explanation on this blog, and I'll just leave you this picture:

I know this was a short post, but, well, I'm a kid. I want to enjoy my holidays. Well, I suppose I'll blog more later. See ya next time!

-KCR

*NOTE: May not of actually learn anything

What I learnt this term

This term I learnt about plant reproduction. This has to be one of the most interesting subjects because I think it's interesting how there's only one girls part, and multiple boy parts. I liked this segment because it has been different to what I have done in the past. I hope that there are many more interesting segments this year!

This term we learnt many things to many to say. But some things that we learnt about were the circulatory system including the heart and lungs (during this we did a heart dissection). respiratory system and even number systems, talking about patterns and sequences like the Fibonacci sequence. we even started talking
about a-sexual reproduction which is very interesting talking about flowers.

Glitter Words

Today we did a flower dissection. The flowers we use were a pink liliy with a wonderful scent that attrect bees and insects.

Today first of all we got all our equiptment for the dissection.

Next we pulled of all the petals and the anthers off because they were of no use to us in this dssection

Then we cut down the middle of the stigma, after we cut down the stigma we could see that the stigma was a tube going down to the ovary where you could see the tiny little eggs that it producted.

Today in science class we dissected a lily flower. It was really interesting to see what a flower contains on the inside considering that it looks very straight ford from the front. We looked at the male parts of it (stamen) and the female parts (stigma) and how they reproduce asexually. This was a really fun prac and I hope we do some more of this sort of thing soon.

Hi everyone. At the moment we are studying Asexual reproduction (i.e. a flower) Today in Science we dissected a flower to find out how the flower reproduced. I worked in a pair with NG. We got a lily and took the petals off, and we used a scalpel to cut the stem of the flower all the way down the middle. I didn't even need to read Dissection for Dummies!

It was that easy. We then opened up the stem and we saw a tube that must obviously bring the pollen to fertilize in the bottom of the stem. We could see the seeds that would've been growing if we hadn't dissected it. They were the tiniest things. Unfortunately I don't have any photos to show this time; but I have the amazing power of a DIAGRAM!!!!

That is enough from me. Bye, for now.
~BF
Custom Glitter Text It was sick and totally cool!!!!! And we got the pink one. Hehehe. You think that flower are boring but they aren't.They are interesting although it looks dull on the inside. but if you concentrate you can find some pretty cool things in it like the eggs and the tube that the polen goes down. So in the end it was fun watching and learning.

Today in Science we performed a Flower dissection. It was interesting to see what a flower looked like inside. We learnt all the major components in a flower, and their purpose in reproduction and pollination. We also learnt how to identify the different anatomical components of a flower, which was very useful in understanding those components and their purposes. We removed the petals and anthers, and made an incision which ran from the stigma, through the style and ovary, and into the base of the stem. This showed the contents of the inside of the flower, and helped clarify the process which takes place in pollination. After the incision was made, the flower looked a bit like a cross-section diagram!

This is a photo of the dissected stigma and style, with the incision expertly made by MVW.

This activity and the previous few lessons have really helped us understand the process of pollination, its purpose, and the components used in it. They have also shown the correlation between the anatomy of flowers and plant reproduction. It is interesting to see how plants have adapted to the environment to ensure reproduction.

This video summarises the process of pollination.

Flower Dissection

In class today, we learned how to dissect a flower. We did this by recognising all of the different parts, and then, using a scalpel, cutting down the stigma, seeing all of the eggs.

Today during science we had a flower dissection, this was an enjoyable activity as many of us were having fun! We made and incision through the style and stigma as you can see left, when doing this we found that a style has a visible tube through the middle. many of us did not know this and it was fun to learn.

Well, this is my first post ever, so I suppose I should start with AWESOME GLITTER TEXT!!!

Glitter Words

Now how's THAT for a title! Yeah! ...

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Asexual reproduction is where a living organisim reproduces by itself. But what is sexual reproduction? Well, I'd tell you, but I'd probably not be able to ever post again, so... you know...
GOOGLE IT!

Now, under normal circumstances, Animals 'can't' reproduce asexually, however, thanks to the amazing thing known as the KINGDOM OF LIFE, we don't need to worry about that anymore.

Plants (most of the time) Bacterium (excluding E. Coli and a few others) and Fungi ( all reproduce asexually. Their are (in real life) very few animals that reproduce asexually, but their are bound to be some, so let's dive right in... Take that however you want...

The Earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), although SUPPOSED to reproduce sexually (I really don't know how), can actually produce asexually. In very specific circumstances. You see, and earthworm doesn't really have a brain, or a heart, or anything that resembles a normal creature. So when it's cut in two, if there's enough energy to keep both ends alive, it will grow into two sepertate worms. Isn't that awesome! The seastar (Asteroidia) also has a simillar process, where if one of it's arms is cut off, the arm can grow into another seastar.

Finally, I want to talk about an interesting animal called an Aphid (Aphioidea), which not only can produce both sexually and asexually, but... well, to understand it, you just need to watch this: Yeah, it got a little off the topic, but it was the most reliable video I could find. Now, I think I'm going to end my post here, because my hands are hurting and, well, I've already condensed a weeks worth of SCIENCE LESSONS into one post, so... HAPPY BLOGGING!
Glitter Words Today we converted fraction decimals and percentages in our math books. first we ruled up a table with 3 colums and 5 rows( you can put as many rows as you want). Then jp7numeracy put one number in each row and then we had to convert those numbers to the emty boxs. The end product should look like this:

Currently we are learning about asexual reproduction. As a general rule, animals cannot reproduce asexually. However, there are exceptions. Amoebas and other single-celled organisms reproduce asexually, being too small to have gender. Certain larger animals may reproduce asexually through either: parthenogenesis under certain circumstances (that is, reproduction via self-cloning), gynogenesis (via the catalyst of a male nearby which does not actually fertilize the eggs). Here is a video of bacteria reproducing asexually.

Today in maths we learnt all about decimals, percentages and fractions. We learnt how to convert decimals to fractions and percentages and vice verse. It was a heap of fun and everyone was asking lots of questions which helped me a lot.

Last Friday, we learn't how to multiply decimals, I found it fun and easy. Here is a video I found, to explain what we learn't about:

Finding Energy in Food

LED Text Scroller

Hi guys! This week in Science we have been burning food. You may be wondering, why would be burning food? The answer is this: We are finding the energy in food. It was a pretty fun prac. I, BF, was in a group with RA, SN, and RB. We all took turns at burning the food. Here are the results:

Food

How easily did the food catch fire?

How big/intense a flame did it burn with?

How long did it burn for?

Tiny Teddies

5 seconds

Approx. 1cm

Approx. 1:02 min

Chips

4 seconds

Approx. 15 cm

Approx. 1:32 min

Pasta

6 seconds

Approx. 1 cm.

Approx. 32.3 sec.

I thought the chips had the most fat because:
  • It caught alight quickly
  • The flame was huge
  • It was alight for more than 1 minute
  • And fat was dripping off in droves.
It was a fun science class, but not for the food...

Today we looked at testing for Fat, Starch, Protein and Sugar in food. We did this by using a range of chemical tests.
To test for starch for example, we added two drops of iodine to a range of food samples. A blue/black reaction suggests starch is present.

CHEMICALS!!!!!!!!!!

Today we tested food samples if they contained starch, sugar, protein and fat. We added chemicals such as Bluret Solution A and B and Benedict's solution to the food. We could tell what it contained by the colour of the food. For example, to find starch in food, you had to add iodine to the food and it would turn bluish-black if it had starch in it.

MICROSCOPE BLOOD SAMPLES!

The other day I got to look through a microscope at blood samples. I tried 4 different samples; Sickle Cell, Smear, Kambio and Sperm. These were amazing to look at... but sperm was by far the best! Looking through the microscope made it look like purple and pink bunched up jelly beans!
I had so much fun, and microscopes are AMAZING!

Pluck

A few days ago me and my class had a look at some of the organs of a lamb. We looked at the liver, the lungs, the heart, the windpipe and the tongue was even there! We got to get a good look and feel of arteries and what organs feel like. The teacher showed us the sectum and pumped air into the lungs, it was good watching them inflate.

The other day we had the opportunity of dissecting a heart. This was a very interesting activity and I enjoyed learning all different parts that make up the heart. The key points we looked at was the trachea, veins and arteries. I learnt that the veins job is to transport blood to the heart, whereas the arteries transport blood away from it to the lungs. I also learnt how to find out the difference between the left and the right side of the heart. The left side's wall would be a lot more firmer than the right. I really wish we could do this activity again sometime.

Custom Glitter Text

In science today we got to dissect a heart, which was like the pluck that we did earlier
this weak, but it was even better. Luckily I got to be the one that made the incisions,
which made the experience even better than it already was. MVW took pictures and
taped it, so that was good too. The heart that we got was monstrously huge, and the wall
of the left ventricle was atleast 1 inch thick. Nearly all of the features were clearly visible,
but the valves were less obvious than they were in the text book. We didn't have any
problems, and everything was fun, even putting the scalpel together.

This has definitely been the best activity we have done in school, and I think lab pracs are
going to be one of the most fun things we do all year.

Yesterday we dissected a sheep's heart. It was really interesting and I would never have done that at my old school. We got to observe the key points that makes a heart function, including the trachea, veins and arteries. Sounds really gross but is actually really cool and I am really excited about what we will learn this year.
Glitter Words

Today we did a heart dissection and we could see everything that we learnt in class
a few weeks ago .We got to feel the sheeps heart and we got to cut it open. On the
right side of the heart me and my friend could see some of the deoxygenated blood
that was still left inside the heart. And of the left side their wasn't much oxygenated
blood but the left side of the heart was really tough unlike the right side of the heart
which was soft. In previous lesssons jp7numeracy told us that the left side of the heart
is stronger then the right side of the heart becuase the right side of the heart has to pump
blood all around the body.
Pluck, Heart and More

In the past week our class has been doing some biology in the class. we started off with the pluck, were we got to have a look at the main organs of a lamb, including the Trachea, Lungs, Heart and the Liver.

2 days after we then got to dissect a sheep heart with my lab partner MN it was awesome!!!!! We had one cut each and then used the tweezers to poke through the main arteries and veins.

i cant wait till my next science lesson!!!!!!!!!!
Yesterday, I had the interesting experience of dissecting a sheep brain, I was scared cutting open the brain, so thats why I was a scribe. I documented the whole dissection! But that wasnt my only job, my second job was to examin the brain and all the parts including the aorta, right ventrical, left ventrical, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein etc!!!

The Pluck.

Not to long ago, I undertook the challenge of touching the inner of a sheep! (the lungs, heart, trachea and liver)
I had to feel the lungs and other parts and observe things. I found out that the lungs expand majorly when we breathe in and out! The pluck was enjoyable and i had lots of fun!
Now I know more about the human body! (and a sheep's)

Today during class we had the heart dissection, this was very enjoyable. we learnt about where the veins are and that the walls of the left and right are very different. Shown on the left is the left wall of the heart, it is much thicker so it can deal with the pressure of pushing blood around the body.
